The Difference Between Real Estate Agents, Realtors, and Brokers

The Difference Between Agents and Realtors
To some people outside of the industry, “real estate agents” and “realtors” may seem like interchangeable terminology. But this is not quite the case. Let’s take a look at the big differences by breaking down what each of these are.
Real estate agents gain their title by first taking courses and then taking an exam that proves they are ready for a license. With this license, they’re able to meet clients, host open houses, and do nearly everything else involved in selling property. This sounds like what everyone thinks when it comes to real estate agents, correct? That being said, how does a realtor differ?
Agents can actually become realtors. By being active and being a paying member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), you can use the realtor title. However, there is generally no difference. The title just distinguishes a difference between members and non-members of the NAR.
But What Are Brokers?
For many industries, there are many steps you can take to further your career. In real estate, you could become a broker and further your career to new and different heights.
But what makes someone a broker? And what can a broker do that an agent cannot? It begins quite the same way as becoming an agent does. Depending on your state, there are a number of requirements you must meet, including education, and an exam at the end. For example, in Louisiana, you must:
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Provide proof of mandatory errors and omissions insurance before the issuance of a license.
- Proof of successful completion of 150 class hours or equivalent courses. These courses must also have approval from the LREC.
- Have been actively licensed for at least four years. Two of these years must be immediately preceding the submission of a broker license application.
- Pass the broker exam.
The biggest difference between a broker from a real estate agent is one critical detail. A broker is allowed to have their own real estate firm, unlike an agent.
