A Short History of Real Estate

Real estate has become such a big part of our culture. We talk about it in movies, we have books about it, and for some of us—we focus our entire career around it. But where did we start? And, what events led real estate to become such a big part of how we live? Our online real estate school has some fun historical facts to share with you! If you’re in Lake Charles, New Orleans, Shreveport or anywhere else in Louisiana and are looking for online real estate courses—look no further than Bob Brooks School.

Where Did It All Begin?

As far as real estate goes, where did it all begin? Well, before our nation came together and industry made a job out of it, not many people owned their homes. Usually, the only people who did were farmers who passed it on through the family. This is simply because most people didn’t have the money to make the entire purchase, and banks wouldn’t lend money to average people to buy the house in the first place. Additionally, mortgages weren’t common until the banks stabilized in the 1860s.

So, if real estate didn’t have regulations or real rules, how did anything get done? Not easily, unfortunately. Luckily, the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) came along to provide some help.

History Of NAR

Actually, did you know the National Association of REALTORS® wasn’t founded until 1908? Initially founded as the “National Association of Real Estate Exchanges,” their purpose was “to unite the real estate men of America for the purpose of effectively exerting a combined influence upon matters affecting real estate interests.” And even though the name went through a change, they still embody this today, 100 years later. In 1916, the term “realtor” and “real estate agent” became the identifiers for these professionals. That being said, it wasn’t until three years later that you actually needed a license to be an agent.

As time passed, the growth of resources and technology has given birth to a thriving industry and career. And it continues to evolve! Getting an online real estate education from your home in Lake Charles wasn’t even possible until recently. Let alone 100 years ago or 200 years ago.
